How to Get Work as a Self-Employed Painter

Painting enquiries often start with a photograph of a tired room, but the real work is in the preparation. A useful portfolio and a quote that explains that preparation help a new painter stand out.

Show the preparation, not just the final colour

Photograph walls after filling and sanding as well as after the last coat. Note whether the job involved stained ceilings, peeling paint or new plaster: clients comparing quotes need to know you have handled their particular surface before. Ask permission before showing interiors online.

Quote by room and condition

Visit before promising a fixed price. Record wall and ceiling condition, furniture moving, protection, number of coats and whether woodwork is included. Specify who supplies paint and how extra repair work will be agreed; an apparently cheap quote that omits preparation is hard to defend later.

Find repeat painting work

Letting agents need between-tenancy refreshes; decorators and plasterers can refer customers whose walls are ready for paint. Introduce yourself with a few dated project photos and realistic availability, then ask completed customers for a review mentioning the rooms and surfaces you painted.
